Thoughtful and deceptively simple. Ashmore Grief ties the complex moral dilemma of asylum seekers arriving by boat to a simple love story and naked ambition in political intrigue. The style is understated, and laconic but so are the main characters who deal with the aftermath of an boat full of asylum seekers, each in their own way. One is a naval midshipman, another an asylum seeker trapped in the sex slave trade, and a former refugee who wants to be Prime Minister. A love story and ambition shows that in a complex situation, the right thing to do is often the simple thing right in front of you.Product details

Ashmore Grief edition by DA Cairns Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
While not my usual genre preference i would higd highly recommend this book. Thie author takes the reader on a thought provoking journey that is the lives of the three main characters. Wittaya who came to Australia as an assylum seeker at the age of 3 and has a strong desire to become Prime Minister. He is a strong character who shows commitment to reaching his goal despite his past. Thuza who is also an assylum seeker. However her journey is not an easy one. Hers is filled with emotional trauma and of being lead into sexual slavery but will she survive and find freedom in her new country. And Mark who is a Naval officer who has aspirations to become an advocate for assylum seekers but the Navy is reluctant to grant him his resignation.
This is a human story that has a heart and while the characters are not perfect their story will touch your heart will give you some food for thought
What is the right thing to do? Sometimes it’s not black and white. But then again, sometimes it is. This story is set in Australia. Much of it deals with illegal immigrants seeking asylum. They are referred to as ‘boat people’. The ‘wannabe’ Prime Minister, Wittaya Keawwanna, was himself a ‘boat person’ at the young age of three. As the story begins, he is a Senator and stepping up to deal with a catastrophe that, if not handled with kid gloves, could hurt his chances in the election. The HMAS Albany was up against a people-smuggling boat that would not turn from Australian waters because it could not. It was overfilled with more than 70 people, mostly women and children. Suddenly, one of the refugees opened fire causing the HMAS Albany to react. After a few brief, intense moments, fourteen refugees were dead along with two sailors. The story moves ahead alternating between Wittaya; MarkClayfield who was a naval midshipman aboard the HMAS Albany; and seventeen year old Thuza who was an asylum seeker.
The story is political as Wittaya and others discuss their differences with what should be done about the boat people. It is also a personal story of those trying to survive and seek a better life. But if and when you get there, is it a better life after all? The novel is a great blend of people and ideas. However, some of the transitions from one chapter to the other, or from one scene to the other were a bit choppy. I rated Ashmore Grief at 3.5 out of 5.
